My Training Philosophy
At K9University, I believe dog training is about far more than obedience commands or simply “fixing” behaviors. Training is about creating clear communication, trust, structure, confidence, emotional balance, and a healthier relationship between dogs and their owners.
Dogs absolutely have the ability to bring incredible joy, freedom, and connection into our lives — but when communication, structure, and guidance are missing, frustration and behavioral struggles can quickly begin to take over. One of the biggest things I help owners understand is that training is not just about changing the dog’s behavior — it’s also about helping humans better understand how their own energy, consistency, communication, and follow-through influence the relationship as well.
I take a thoughtful, balanced, relationship-centered approach to training and behavior modification. Over the years, I have spent a tremendous amount of time studying and understanding multiple sides of the dog training world, including both reward-based and balanced training philosophies. Because every dog, owner, lifestyle, and behavioral challenge is different, I believe training should never be approached with a rigid “one size fits all” mindset.
I heavily emphasize positive reinforcement throughout the training process, especially in the beginning stages of learning. Dogs deserve the opportunity to clearly understand behaviors, build confidence, and enjoy the learning process without fear or confusion. Rewards, engagement, relationship building, and clear communication are foundational pieces of my programs.
At the same time, I am also open to incorporating tools, structure, accountability, and fair forms of guidance when appropriate for the individual dog and owner. My goal is never to force dogs into obedience, but rather to help create clarity, reliability, emotional stability, and healthier real-world behavior in a fair and thoughtful way.
I specialize in modern, low-level, communication-style E-Collar training and the thoughtful use of training tools such as slip leads, prong collars, long lines, and remote collars when appropriate. Contemporary E-Collar training is very different from the outdated methods many people picture when they hear the word “e-collar.” When properly conditioned, the e-collar becomes a gentle communication tool that allows owners to safely and clearly communicate with their dogs both on and off leash.
For safety reasons, all off-leash reliability training at K9University is conditioned through remote collar communication. My priority is always creating the safest, clearest, and most reliable communication possible for both dogs and owners in real-world environments.
Above all else, I believe training should be fair, compassionate, realistic, and sustainable for both the dog and the owner. Real transformation does not happen through quick fixes or shortcuts — it happens through consistency, understanding, communication, structure, and intentional practice over time.
My goal is to help bridge the communication gap between humans and dogs so owners can experience more peace, confidence, freedom, and connection with their dogs both at home and in everyday life.
